Since 2004, NORCAT has hosted the Planetary and Terrestrial Mining Sciences Symposium (PTMSS). The PTMSS is the only venue in the world which attempts to address the parallels between Earth based mining and space mining.

The need for mining activity on other planets in support of longer robotic and human missions is paramount. Oxygen and water must be produced from the resources located on the moon. The most abundant and only confirmed resource available is the lunar soil. The use of these resources for life support will require the excavation of the soil and processing to refine the materials out of the raw ore.

As the mining of other planets is a reality and imminent, the mining society, which includes mining companies and mining equipment suppliers, are very interested in watching developments in this area as we proceed.

The conference attracts delegates from around the world who come from both the mining sector and the space sector. The conference has proven to be fertile ground for the growth of new collaborations between and within the sectors.
