FEDNOR INVESTS IN NORCAT’S EXPANDED SERVICES

SUDBURY, Ontario, September 2, 2010 – The Honourable Tony Clement, Minister of Industry and Minister responsible for FedNor, announced today that the Government of Canada, combined with FedNor, will be investing nearly $2 million in support of five community-based economic development companies within the Greater Sudbury region; One of the five being NORCAT.

A FedNor investment of $1,400,000 will support infrastructure enhancements and the expansion of NORCAT’s new 60,000 sq. ft. state-of-the- art technology, training and incubator facility. Once complete, this project will allow NORCAT to help small and medium sized businesses gain access to new technologies, expand their services and enhance operational efficiencies. This opportunity is extremely beneficial to members of the community and those individuals involved in NORCAT.

Out of the $1,400,000 where will the money be going precisely? According to Darryl Lake, CEO of NORCAT, “It’s divided into two packages. The first being the $1 million, where it’s matching funds from the province to add $2 million for the addition for incubation.” NORCAT not only moved in less than 2 years ago, but now incubation facilities are one hundred percent occupied. The second package “is to assist the SME’s to access new technologies, assist entrepreneurs in managing, and develop expanded services and provide maintenance of incubator.”

BARTOLUCCI ANNOUNCES INVESTMENT TO EXPAND ADVANCED TECHNOLOGY CENTRE
“The McGuinty government is helping test new technologies in Greater Sudbury,” says MPP.

Greater Sudbury – Thanks to a McGuinty government investment of $1 million through the Northern Ontario Heritage Fund Corporation (NOHFC), the Northern Centre for Advanced Technology (NORCAT) will be able to expand its Innovation and Commercialization Centre to meet the demands of future businesses, Sudbury MPP Rick Bartolucci announced today.

“By investing in NORCAT’s residency program, we are helping provide important incubator space that will enable companies to develop new processes and prepare for future growth,” said Bartolucci.

As a result of today’s investment, NORCAT will be able to expand the Innovation and Commercialization Centre to meet the demands of three new businesses, by adding an additional 5,000 square feet of shop space. The expansion will also result in the creation of 10 new jobs in Greater Sudbury.

Funded under the NOHFC’s Infrastructure and Community Development Program, today’s announcement expands on the Ontario Government’s commitment of $1.5 million made in 2007, towards the initial construction of the centre.

“The continued support by the NOHFC into NORCAT’s residency program illustrates the strong commitment the Ontario Government has to helping businesses in the north grow and reach into other markets. With this new expansion project, even more SME’s will be able to take advantage of NORCAT’s specialized facilities to help them gain a competitive edge,” said Darryl Lake CEO, NORCAT.

“The McGuinty government has always been committed to funding technology and innovation in Greater Sudbury,” concluded Bartolucci. “This additional investment in NORCAT’s facilities will provide more opportunities to nurture new business and industrial development projects in our community.”

MINISTRY OF NORTHERN DEVELOPMENT AND MINES INVESTS $1.5M
IN NORCAT'S INNOVATION AND COMMERCIALIZATION PARK

SUDBURY - The McGuinty government is fuelling innovation in the North by investing in two new exciting centres at NORCAT and Cambrian College, Minister of Northern Development and Mines Rick Bartolucci announced today.

“The Innovation and Commercialization Park will build on the services already offered by NORCAT in nurturing new business and industrial development concepts,” said Bartolucci, who is also chair of the Northern Ontario Heritage Fund Corporation (NOHFC).

The NOHFC is providing $1.5 million to the Northern Centre for Advanced Technology (NORCAT) to support construction of a 60,000-square foot innovation and commercialization park. The park, to be located off Maley Drive, will provide small and medium enterprises with the space necessary to develop new technology, products and processes. The facility will provide flexible space to meet the needs of tenants seeking to develop projects or expand their markets. A unique aspect of the project will be its “techno/business” component, which will provide a complete array of services including business advice, formal organization, planning and access, business development funds, space (retail, shop, and storage), prototyping and technological assistance.

“Yet again, the provincial government is showing outstanding leadership in ensuring a competitive Ontario,” said Darryl Lake, CEO and Executive Director of NORCAT. “Through their continued support of NORCAT, Premier McGuinty and Minister Bartolucci are laying a foundation for Sudbury and the province to take the lead in innovation and commercialization. I commend and thank them for their vision and for their commitment to the North and to Ontario.”

“Current available commercial space is often geared toward long-term commitments which do not meet the needs or are beyond the financial capacity of many start-up operations,” said Bartolucci. “All the services provided by this centre will be located at a single site to allow for co-mingling among clients and anchor tenants, helping to build strong foundations for new ventures while strengthening the North’s industrial, technological and business cluster.”
