#770010 - Underground Hard Rock Miner Common Core

The Underground Hard Rock Miner program is 5 weeks in duration. This comprehensive training program complies with the standards set out by the Ministry of Training, Colleges, and Universities (MTCU). In the practical training sessions, all aspects of each module are reviewed and practiced. Every module of the training will be completed to the trainee’s personal satisfaction and to the satisfaction of the instructor to ensure the complete working knowledge and skill required for every module.

Each successful graduate of the program will be registered with the MTCU under Program #770010 Underground Hard Rock Miner.

  • General Work Site Inspections - STH0100 (U0001)
  • Rock Conditions – STH0110 (U0002)

  • Meet OHSA requirements for competent person.

It is the candidate's responsibility to inform the local Apprenticeship Client Services office of a change of name, address or transfer to a new employer and provide documents as required for registration. To be accredited in the Underground Hardrock Mining First Line Production/Development Supervisor Common Core Program, the employee must have demonstrated competency in each of the above 770121 Program Modules. Courses are delivered over a minimum three month period with one week each month for classroom and field instruction. A final complete audit & exam is required after four to six months on the job. All candidates must be employed by a sponsor employer WITH APPROVED MTCU SIGNING AUTHORITY.

#770200 & #770150 - Surface and Underground Diamond Drilling Common Core

The Surface and Underground Diamond Driller Assistant Common Core Program was developed by NORCAT in compliance with the Ontario Ministry of Training, Colleges, and Universities (MTCU) standards. Upon successful completion of this program, each trainee will obtain accreditation and will be registered with the MTCU for Surface and Underground Diamond Driller Assistant (#770200 and #770150).

This five-week (200 hours) program combines both theory and practical hands-on, experiential learning in an operating mine environment. Trainees will learn to operate various pieces of equipment and the safety requirements and government guidelines that you must understand to successfully complete the program.

#770210 - Surface Miner Common Core

The 1 day Surface Miner Common Core program consists of 28 modules in total. NORCAT performs the first 3 modules (Section 1) as they are the core minimum modules for entry to a pit, quarry, or excavation site. The 25 specialty modules (Section 2-6) are available upon request.

#770225 - Basic Underground Hard Rock Mine Service Types Common Core

This program is required to be completed before an employee can perform any underground work. The program consists of four modules:

U0000 - Follow Surface and Underground Induction Procedures

The general performance objectives includes: Follow surface and underground induction procedures, by identifying surface and underground areas; responding to emergencies; applying company policies, union contracts and joint health and safety policy; operating communication systems; identifying on-site explosive types and following related handling procedures; and reviewing multi-channel radio use.

U0001 - Perform General Inspections

The general performance objective includes: Perform general inspections, by wearing, adjusting and maintaining personal protective equipment; erecting safety signs; operating fire extinguishers; maintaining ventilation flow; operating hand and power tools; locking out and/or tagging mobile and fixed equipment; performing emergency evacuation; identifying and reporting water in chutes and hang ups; and practicing good housekeeping.

U0002 - Scale Loose Rock

The general performance objective includes: Scale loose rock, by identifying and responding to loose and abnormal ground conditions; identifying and responding to faulty ground support; identifying and responding to workplace hazards; inspecting and preparing the rock for scaling and scaling rock.

U0012- Perform General Lock Out and Tag on Prime Movers and Other Related Equipment

Upon successful completion of the Service Type Common Core training, plus WHMIS training or proof of WHMIS training, NORCAT will provide the trainee with a NORCAT card plus all documentation of the Service Type common core training. This level of safety training has proven useful to individuals who wish to secure employment with mining service contractors. NORCAT does not register the Service Type Common Core.

#770225 - Basic Underground Hard Rock Miner Service Types Common Core (module U0012 only)

Effective April 2014, Service Type Common Core (#770225) was enhanced with the addition of the U0012 module. This program is intended for those who have previously registered their 770225 training transcripts with the MLITSD and are missing U0012 from their training records.


U0012- Perform General Lock Out and Tag on Prime Movers and Other Related Equipment


Upon successful completion of the Service Type Common Core training, plus WHMIS training or proof of WHMIS training, NORCAT will provide the trainee with a NORCAT card plus all documentation of the Service Type common core training. This level of safety training has proven useful to individuals who wish to secure employment with mining service contractors. NORCAT does not register the Service Type Common Core.


#810050 - Basic Mill Process Operator Common Core

The Basic Mill Process Operator – Mineral Ore Common Core Program #810050 was developed by the Ministry of Training, Colleges and Universities.

It has been developed with cooperative efforts from the MTCU, in consultation with representatives from industry.

The program consists of 4 basic mill common core modules and 10 groups of specialty modules. NORCAT performs the first 4 modules (Section 1) as they are the core minimum modules for entry to a mill:

  • U3430 Follow Mill Induction Procedures
  • U3352 Work Safely in a Mill Environment
  • U3358 Handle Reagents, Chemicals, and Designated Substances
  • U3431 Perform General Lock Out and Tag on Prime Movers and Other Related Equipment

The specialty modules (Section 2) are available upon request.

The program is based on attesting to each trainee demonstrating competency and actually performing the exercises or work described in each module. This training module is intended as a guideline for training, all elements in each performance objective may not apply in all operations.

#810090 - CC for Non-Production Workers - Smelter Op

During this training program, trainees will review how to work safely in a smelter environment including how to identify and deal with hazardous conditions such as hot dust, molten metal, operating equipment, conveyors, and confined spaces. Trainees will also demonstrate competencies including: operate a freight elevator, perform lock and tag on hazardous energy, identify hazards and controls, and practice emergency procedures.

This ministry-mandated common core program is required for non-production smelter workers such as process engineers, technologists, specialists, 2nd line supervisors, yard services, trades persons - including millwrights, electricians, instrumentation technologists, stationary engineers, and more.

Contract Compliancy Verification

The City of Greater Sudbury has partnered with NORCAT to manage the training records as required by each contract. Contractors submit their training records to the Registration Office at NORCAT, where the records of training are uploaded onto the individual’s NORCAT Safety Wallet Smart Card. The price is $20 per individual per year and includes unlimited record updates within the year at no additional cost.

City of Greater Sudbury personnel will be scanning the NORCAT Safety Wallet Smart Card periodically to ensure compliance with the training outlined in the contract documents.

De Beers Victor Mine Process Plant Orientation

The purpose of this orientation is to provide employees, contractors and visitors with the basic information to work safely and efficiently in the processing plant, while operating in accordance with DeBeers - Victor Mine policies and procedures.

De Beers Victor Mine Site Orientation

The De Beers Victor Mine Orientation program will be delivered by NORCAT at their Sudbury and Timmins locations as well as online through our eLearning programs. This mandatory orientation program is for contractors and service providers reporting to the De Beers Victor Mine starting September 1, 2015. The training program will include information specific to Victor Mine as well as awareness training in lock out/tag out, confined space, fall protection and Ministry of Labour Worker Health and Safety Awareness. The program must be renewed every 12 months and proof of training will be provided on your NORCAT Qualification Training Card. Proof of training must be provided to De Beers to gain Right of Entry (ROE) access to the mine site.

Elevated Work Platform

NORCAT’s Elevated Work Platforms training program is designed to promote the safe use, inspection, operation and an understanding of hazards associated with Elevating Work Platforms or Aerial Platforms. This program covers a variety of equipment including Scissor Lifts (SkyJack, Mobile Elevating Work Platforms), Aerial Lifts (Genie Booms, Telescopic Booms).

This comprehensive program is delivered in two parts to provide the necessary theoretical understanding and practical training to facilitate compliance for workers using aerial lift equipment. Includes assessment of both theoretical knowledge and demonstration of practical skill.

Prerequisites:

Valid Working at Heights Certificate

Modules include:

  • Responsibilities (employer/supervisor/operator)
  • Operator's manual and familiarization with your EWP (types and uses)

First Responder

Comprehensive first aid and CPR skills for professional first responders or those training to become first responders. The course teaches the patient assessment model, cardiopulmonary resuscitation, hemorrhage control, and care for a variety of acute and chronic conditions. Participants will be engaged in dynamic training techniques including video, media presentations, skills demonstrations, practice sessions, discussions and scenarios based on real-life situations.

Fit Test - Eye

Even when using the right safety glasses for the job, eye injuries can still take place if the glasses do not fit properly. The quality and security of the fit is critical to the effectiveness of safety glasses. Choosing safety glasses that are too small or too big can leave gaps, exposing the worker to potential hazards.

NORCAT’s Testing Agents measure the wearer for gaps around the soft tissue surrounding the eyes to help choose the safety glasses that provide the best fit.

High Pressure Washing

High pressure washing is a powerful and reliable method used for industrial cleaning. If operated properly, high pressure washing systems can be extremely effective in maintaining the efficiency and productivity of process equipment. However, if used improperly, serious injuries to workers and damage to equipment and property can easily occur.

This program has been developed to train workers in the safe operation of high pressure washing equipment.

Rigging is the job of making the necessary preparations for lifting or moving a load safely. This 3-day, 13-module program will teach the skills required to know the strength and capabilities of many tools, materials and devices that are available for rigging work. In addition, how to properly apply this information and use the tools and the equipment safely.

The day 3 emphasis will be on non-routine lifts up to critical lifts. Trainees will be given different scenarios and follow a process to determine which category the lift falls under and who to get involved in the lift as well as in-depth categorizing and planning of lifts in a formal way.

Joint Health & Safety Committee Certification pt 1

NORCAT is pleased to offer the MLITSD's CPO-approved JHSC Certification Training Program: Part One. At workplaces where a JHSC is required, at least one JHSC member representing the employer and one member representing workers must be certified by the Chief Prevention Officer. Certified members play an essential role in the Internal Responsibility System (IRS) for the occupational health and safety of Ontario workplaces.

This 3-day training program is generic to all workplaces that require both employer and worker certified members, regardless of workplace sector.

Off-Road Vehicle Training - Fat Truck Level 1

NORCAT is pleased to offer a comprehensive training course for Fat Trucks Operators. The Fat Truck training teaches operators the capabilities and limitations of the vehicle, how to best operate the vehicle in various conditions, and how to use good judgement in any situation. All while doing so in the safest way possible.

Fat Truck - Level 1 is a 1-day course that covers getting to know your machine, learning the controls and operations of the machine, and getting hands-on operation regarding a variety of riding techniques and strategies.

Off-Road Vehicle Training - Fat Truck Level 2

Fat Truck - Level 2 is a course in addition to the Level 1 training. This additional day of training teaches winching techniques and how to safely enter and exit water.

Office Safety Awareness

Workplace accidents are a common occurrence and almost all can be prevented. NORCAT's Office Safety Awareness course will inform you of safe work practices, teach you how to recognize potentially dangerous situations in the workplace and how to react in a responsible manner.

OHS Construction Leadership for Employers

NORCAT’s OHS Construction Leadership for Employers training program is offered to employers and is customizable to reference employer’s current OHS management system.

The OHS Construction Leadership for Employers training program is comprised of the following 4 modules:

  • Legislation – Act and Regulations, and company’s OHS program
  • Hazard identification
  • Incident Management -Preparing for Emergencies
  • OHS Leadership and Effective Communication

After Training: The employer is responsible to continue to educate the worker in company/site-specific processes, procedures, and responsibilities. This program is also available in distance learning format using Zoom. Please call for details.

Practical - Respirator Fit Test

NORCAT’s half-face mask quantitative fit testing meets CSA Standard Z94.4 and is therefore recognized by Sudbury Integrated Nickel Operations and Vale. NORCAT’s Testing Agents are trained in the regulations pertaining to this program and are competent in selection, use and care of respirators.

The fit test is approximately 10 minutes long and no appointment is necessary. Fit Testing is provided between 8:00am and 3:00pm.

NOTE: Our Thunder Bay location offers qualitative fit testing.

Practical - Respirator Fit Test (Full Mask)

NORCAT’s full-face mask quantitative fit testing meets CSA Standard Z94.4 and is therefore recognized by Sudbury Integrated Nickel Operations and Vale. NORCAT’s Testing Agents are trained in the regulations pertaining to this program and are competent in selection, use and care of respirators.

The fit test is approximately 10 minutes long and no appointment is necessary. Fit Testing is provided between 8:00am and 3:00pm.

Propane Construction - Heater & Tiger Torch

Providing the theory and practical training required to safely connect, activate, and disconnect heaters, torches, and propane-powered equipment of less than 400,000 Btu/h, in accordance with Technical Standards and Safety Authority (TSSA) requirements.

Recognizing Someone Under the Influence and What To Do

Recommended for supervisors.

Learn what affects your worker’s attitude and behaviors. Understand the difference between substance abuse and dependency and how to approach a worker you suspect may be under the influence. This program will encourage you to take a look at your enforcement policies, documentation procedures and provide you with tools on how to confront an employee.

Respiratory Protection Awareness

The inhalation of toxic materials is perhaps the greatest risk and greatest concern of any worker. That is why it is essential that a person's respiratory system be protected from these chemicals.

This program discusses:

  • The two main types of respirators.
  • Things to look for when performing an inspection.
  • Fit-testing and fit-checks.
  • Physiological and psychological limitations of wearing a respirator
  • Types of filters and cartridges.
  • Warning properties.
  • Respirator cleaning, disinfection and storage.
Rigging/Hoisting/Towing

This course covers the practices and techniques for safe rigging, hoisting, and towing loads. Pre-lift hazard assessments, safety factors and safe working load limits, types of rigging hitches, crane and hoist signals, how a trailer affects a vehicle’s operation, how to connect a vehicle and trailer, how to load a trailer, are covered and much more.

Suspended Access Equipment Installer

Providing the theory and practical training for the installation and inspection of a suspended work platform system. It is designed to meet the training requirements outlined in the current Construction Projects regulation (O. Reg. 213/91, s. 138.1 (3)).

Trainees will be instructed in the reading and use a roof plan and work plan, assemble a suspended work platform system in accordance with the manufacturer’s instructions, and inspect the assembled system.

The Train the Trainer course is based on 3 days. The first session involves instruction in adult-centered teaching methods and principles of learning. Eighty percent of the course consists of the participants engaging in lesson planning, presentation/classroom delivery, the emphasis being on skills transfer, evaluations and primarily program development. The trainer candidate should also be a person of integrity with leadership qualities in his/her area of expertise but above all they must want to do the job, which is demanding. Working at Heights - Refresher

NORCAT is pleased to offer Working at Heights Refresher training. In order for workers to maintain their validity of training, workers must successfully complete refresher training within 3 years of previous Working at Heights training. This Refresher program will reinforce key learning outcomes for workers and will also keep learners up-to-date on any legislative, regulatory or equipment changes which may impact working at heights in construction.

Upon successful completion, each student will receive a NORCAT Certification Card, registration with the MLITSD and an MLITSD certification card (by mail). Proof of prior CPO-approved Working at Heights certification is an absolute requirement., preferable prior to attendance, or on the day of the course.

Workplace Violence and Harassment

This program explains workplace violence, harassment, and sexual harassment as defined under the OHSA and discusses the responsibilities and rights under the Act.
YES - Office Safety Awareness

Workplace accidents are a common occurrence and almost all can be prevented. NORCAT's Office Safety Awareness course will inform you of safe work practices, teach you how to recognize potentially dangerous situations in the workplace and how to react in a responsible manner .

YES - Outdoor Environmental Safety Awareness

The Outdoor Safety Awareness program is aimed at young workers who will primarily be performing manual labour or outdoor work. The program highlights rules of conduct, personal protective equipment, personal hygiene, and safe work practices.

Young workers are also introduced to the safe practices for lifting heavy objects, painting and staining, grooming landscapes, operating power tools, using gas-powered equipment, working with ladders, confined space awareness, handling hazardous materials, and fueling machinery.
