Job Position: Software Engineer

Location: Sudbury, ON (some travel required), Full-time, In-person

Position Description:

We are seeking a software-focused engineer to support the configuration, troubleshooting, and performance of deployed systems. This role focuses on ensuring systems operate reliably in real-world environments, both in the shop and in the field. You will work closely with field and development teams to configure systems, diagnose issues, and maintain performance across deployments.

Responsibilities:

  • Configure and set up software systems, including networking, services, and system initialization
  • Troubleshoot Linux systems, networking issues, and system-level software problems
  • Support field deployments and commissioning activities
  • Execute system validation and verification procedures during deployment
  • Collect logs, system data, and diagnostic information for issue investigation
  • Work with the software development team to resolve issues and improve system performance
  • Provide remote troubleshooting and support for deployed systems
  • Follow and contribute to system setup and troubleshooting procedures


Requirements / Qualifications:

Qualifications:

  • Strong experience with Linux systems (command line, services, networking)
  • Experience working with ROS (Robot Operating System) in deployed systems
  • Experience using Docker for containerized applications and system deployment
  • Solid understanding of networking fundamentals (IP, routing, connectivity)
  • Strong troubleshooting ability across software and integrated systems
  • Experience working with IP cameras, LiDAR, radar, or similar sensor systems in deployed environments
  • Familiarity with edge computing and AI-based systems deployed on-device
  • Experience working in field or industrial environments is an asset
  • Able to work independently and take ownership of assigned tasks
  • Degree in Engineering, Computer Science, or related field is an asset
  • Valid driver’s license

This includes creating integration drawings, wiring diagrams, and bills of materials required for deployment. Responsibilities:

  • Support system integration onto mobile and stationary equipment
  • Determine how systems are installed on machines, including power sources, mounting locations, and cable routing
  • Define cable lengths, connector types, and integration details required for deployment
  • Develop and maintain bills of materials for system builds and installations
  • Source components and work with suppliers to support builds and deployments
  • Create and review wiring diagrams and integration documentation
  • Test and validate new hardware, components, and integration approaches prior to deployment
  • Travel to site to inspect equipment, validate installations, and support commissioning
  • Support field teams with troubleshooting and integration challenges
  • Help standardize installation approaches across different machine types
  • Work closely with development to ensure systems can be reliably deployed

  • Coordinate system deployments including shipment, installation, and commissioning
  • Work directly with field engineers and customer site teams during deployments
  • Track progress, issues, and risks across active deployments
  • Ensure issues are resolved quickly with minimal impact to operations
  • Act as the main point of contact for customers after deployment
  • Support onboarding, training, and day-to-day system use
  • Ensure customers are using the system effectively and getting value
  • Capture feedback from the field, including operational challenges and user experience
  • Work with engineering and product teams to drive improvements
  • Develop case studies and summaries from successful deployments


Requirements / Qualifications:

Requirements:

  • 5+ years experience in mining, field operations, or industrial environments
  • Strong coordination and communication skills in field environments
  • Hands-on, problem-solving mindset with ability to manage real-world issues
  • Experience working directly with customers and site personnel
  • Based in or willing to relocate to Sudbury, ON
  • Willingness to travel frequently to mine sites
  • Valid driver’s license
  • French is an asset, especially for supporting clients in Québec and bilingual regions

Trainer (Part-time, Timmins)

Reporting to the General Manager - Timmins, the Trainer will administer various training programs offered by NORCAT.

Key Responsibilities:

Facilitate the delivery of health and safety programs. Courses include but are not limited to:

  • Surface Miner Common Core
    • First Line Underground Supervisor Common Core
    • Generic First Line Supervisor
    • Heavy Equipment Operator
    • Working at Heights
    • Train the Trainer
    • JHSC Part 1 and Part 2
  • Participate in the development and continuous improvement of current and new training material
  • Assist in marketing efforts to secure specific training and development contracts with companies in the Timmins area when required
  • Assist in the development of a pipeline of customer prospects for NORCAT by selling services to potential customers in the Timmins area when required
  • Other duties as required.

Requirements / Qualifications:

  • Minimum of three to five years of facilitation/training experience (Adult Education).
  • Strong presentation skills.
  • Five or more years of working experience in either surface, underground mining, forestry and/or construction operations.
  • A Certificate in a ‘Train the Trainer’ program would be an asset.
  • Strong leadership, multi-tasking and communication skills.
  • Strong teamwork and collaboration skills.
  • Working knowledge of Microsoft Word, PowerPoint, Excel, and Outlook.
  • Travel within Ontario is required.
  • The ability to travel within Canada and internationally is an asset.
  • Work experience in health and safety consulting is an asset.
  • Bilingualism is an asset.
